New Beer Incoming

Intro

Servus (Bavarian local way of saying hello). This week we have three really exciting additions to the beer selection at the shop in East Linton. Hacker Pschoor Münchner Gold, Augustiner Dunkel and Hofbrauhaus Freising Huber Weisse. Shockingly for me, they are all from Munich or really close to it! Munich is known globally for Oktoberfest. Two of the beers today are from Breweries that feature at the annual festival.

The Fest only allows breweries from Munich itself to participate. Even though Hofbrauhaus Freising (the last brewery mentioned today) is under the flight path of the Munich airport it isn’t allowed to participate each year at Oktoberfest. The Breweries that however are some of the most famous of all German Beers: Augustiner-Bräu, Hacker-Pschorr-Bräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner, Spatenbräu & Staatliches Hofbräu-München.

Hacker Pschorr Münchner Gold is one of the most historic German Helles! Hacker-Pschorr is based in the heart of Munich and it is one of the bier brands that is most synonomous with Bavaria! Brewed beer for the first ever Oktoberfest in Munich and one of the breweries that has been present at the event ever since. The Gold is brewed in accordance with the German purity law like all the beers that we stock, German’s are VERY particular about how their beer is produced and what constitutes a beer.

Hacker Pschorr is not particularly strong for a german beer and definitely isn’t considered a “Stark Bier” measuring in at only 5.5% with a delicious lager flavour… though as you might expect it has a lot more flavour than a mainstream lager with strong bready tones and loads of citrus freshness. I think that it is a bit hoppier than most of my favourite German Helles but you can’t fault the quality of the beer. Arguably one of Bayern’s best biers which would easily make it one of Germany’s best lagers…. though this is really up for debate 😉

First of all, if you don’t know Dunkel is the German word for Dark. Lots of beers in Germany have Dunkel in the title it simply describes the depth of colour and taste. Although, I am not the biggest fan of Dunkel (Dark) Beer if I am really honest with you. Augustiner Dunkel is undeniably Munich’s ultimate Dunkel Bier. It has a delicious strong malty and intensely aromatic nose, with a really spicy taste and depth of flavour. It’s considered one of the most pleasurable dark beers to drink for lovers of dark beers. I personally haven’t ever tried it, which is shocking. I am looking forward to tasting it when it comes into the shop. Then I can give a more thorough review.

Hofbrauhaus Freising Huber Weisse Bottles 500ml [5.4%]

The last place that I lived in Germany was Freising. Where this delicious beer comes from… not that I am biased. In fact, I am actually biased against Hofbrauhaus Freising as my favourite bier comes from just down the road Weihenstefan. Huber Weisse Beer from Hofbrauhaus Freising has been a struggling brand for a long time. They revamped the brand locally calling it Moy Bier revolutionising its reputation among the younger generation.

It is another beer that I am really looking forward to having in the shop. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to stock my all-time favourite Weihenstefan. Until then this will have to do.

Slowly but surely we are working to become the ultimate one-stop destination for German Beers. We want the best collection in Scotland but at the moment we’ve definitely run out of space! but just to let you know at any one time we have about 15 different German Breweries in stock. Everything from Hofbrauhaus Freising to Berliner Pilsner. If you think that there is a massive gaping hole in our German beer selection do let me know.
